Our ski boat has a Mercury 4.3 in it. It appears that a spark plug has failed and the tip has damaged an exhaust valve as it left the cylinder. Hopefully no piston, cylinder wall or head damage. If I’m lucky just a new valve. We live in hope!.

Good news (well relatively!) Only one bent valve. No head, piston or bore damage.

So the engine has been rebuild and run out of the water. This week she should go back in and hopefully get a good thrash (test) across Breydon later in the week.

She’s back!! Had a lovely run across Breydon 45mph with 500RPM still to go. Sounded sweet as a nut. I’m a happy boater! Great service by all involved and not a horrific price.

Or not .... Took it out today and did a few high speed runs across Breydon and ended up down on power ☹️☹️☹️ Hopefully Doug Ashley coming out tomorrow for a look. On a brighter note I bumped into Cliff on Breydon

After a lot of diagnostics (I had no idea Mercury engines had such sophisticated electronics) it turns out the engine management system had reduced the power because of a faulty idle motor that it couldn’t warn me about because it had lost comms with the warning alarm. So today, pick it up and test it. Test means zip up and down Breydon at high speed if there are no other boats around 😏 There could be other problems the electronics don’t know about .... let’s hope not. Well I hope not even if you don’t 😀

All seems good. Hopefully no more problems for a while!!! Me and my youngest had a wake-boarding session on Thursday and the boat ran really well. The weather was less good!

You’ll never guess .... more engine trouble. This is beginning to feel like a Friday afternoon engine. I’m not sure what the problem is this time but there’s a lot of emulsified oil around and down on power so I’m guessing head gasket (I’m trying not to think about cracked head or block). She’s out of the water and has been anti-fouled whilst out (so at least that’s a positive) and going to Doug Ashley next week.
