I’ve seen a lot of chat about otters being common on the broads but I’ve only seen one near Reedham. Where have you spotted them?

Only seen otters twice in 4 years of being on the river several times a week. We are on Womack and the evidence of them is everywhere - they eat a big mussel which looks like a green-lipped mussel - and leave the shells on our mooring. But they are careful to avoid humans. A family were frolicking at Hunters yard not long ago. Love to see them more.

Not seen them myself yet but our neighbours have on several occasions so we live in hope. We are Repps bank to the west of the staithe.

You are probably right in your assumption as the neighbours usually see them in the gardens opposite them.

I’ve just seen my first otter on the Thurne. I’m not sure I wanted to see this though (not graphic but not nice either) ....

A fact of life I’m afraid. A neighbour says “never count the chicks”. If you do you will record a steady decline. Although we had a surviving clutch of 12 in our dyke. Otters are predators, that’s a fact. The ducks and coots and bunnies all play the numbers game. Breed like crazy and a few survive.

Haven’t seen any myself however, I’m reliably informed they’ve made it to the Kennet and Lodden, possibly even the Blackwater which are my local rivers. As an angler this is a major concern as they’ve wiped out entire lakes. I know they’re furry and cute but the numbers need to be kept in check. Time for a cull, along with Cormerants and pesky seagulls?

Hmmm. Maybe. I think if the numbers get out of hand then yeah, we should probably control them. But are the numbers out of control? People say at Wroxham there are no ducks because the otters have eaten them all. There are certainly very few ducks (loads of swans) but do we know what killed them?
