For anyone who doesn’t know Norfolk Broads Network (NBN) is one of the many Broads boating forums and Facebook groups. I used to use it a lot, there are some great people over there. I had a disagreement with some of the moderators and decided to stop posting there. At the moment it seems like almost every thread turns into a quite nasty argument and their Facebook group seems no better. Someone (they can name themselves here if they want to but it’s not my place to) just posted on the FB group to say they were blocked on the forum. I said I was in a similar position but I could still post in the FB group. Ten minutes later the thread has disappeared and I’m blocked from posting on the FB group. There are accusations that threads also disappear on the forum. Some might say that’s very heavy handed moderation. It would be a shame if NBN died because of this, as I say, there are some very pleasant and knowledge people over there. It makes me almost glad I have nearly no moderation to do here, I can just ramble away to myself 😉

So NBN has appointed a chairman and says it’s going to become a democratic organisation. That sounds awesome (I genuinely mean that) I just hope it’s real change rather than trying very hard to appear to change. Right now my post asking if blocking posts is going to be democratic too is blocked 😏 Ironic isn’t it? If it’s real change I’d love to go back. I do miss the place and some of the people.

In a way I don’t mind being “voted down” by a majority. The bit that gets to me is the mistaken belief that the only people who disagree with the majority are keyboard warriors trolling. There seems to be no understanding that by shouting down the minority anyone with the same view is discouraged from speaking.
I was hoping that this was a sign that they’re really trying to change. Perhaps I’m impatient but half a day after posting my post is still hidden and nobody has been in touch despite most of the mods having logged on. Perhaps they just want to appear to be changing.

This gets better. The NBN now has a constitution. Under that constitution I as a full member have a right to vote on the committee. Whilst I have that power one or more of the (unelected) moderators prevents anyone from seeing anything I post. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so sad.

While on the subject of the other forums, the NBF is looking a bit shaky.

I will believe in democracy when it happens, currently I am barred from seeing the new constitution so cannot huge it’s context but IF the members have a free vote to elect the administration how many people actually know who is actually behind the pseudonyms that everyon hides behind. I know a few from being a boat owner and almost living on her for the last 4 years and a long time (20 plus years) before that but I seriously think tha the use of pseudonyms should be scrapped if they expect to have elections or it will end up as the same old clique controlling the outcome. Incidentally I got barred for congratulating Timbo on his appointment to chairman and wishing him luck in steering the forum in a better direction than it has been heading. That post vanished within five minutes as it contained a mild rebuke of the forum ethos. When I posted again questioning its removal my log in privileges were removed so I can no longer see what is goin on in the now ‘secret’ members only section. Anyway wishing this forum all the best success, your mandate seems fair and well thought out, here’s hoping the cliques don’t spoil it.

Just to add a note, I decried pseudonyms on fora, my user name is my boat, and my name is Paul Hayden. That’s just to prove I am not frightened of people knowing who I am, lots do already.

Good to have you here Paul. If we get everyone the NBN mods block we’ll be doing fine 😏 I was looking at my stats today. Over 500 likes, no warnings and my posts are moderated. It’s kind of the same as banned because whatever I post it doesn’t get approved by the mods. Ironically I’m a full member so could vote at their AGM and help appoint a chairman and treasurer etc etc but can’t vote on the mods who block me from the forum and delete anything I post on FB 😀

Ah! We will see if their version of democracy ever happens. I have been a member there for many years and have made some good friends through it but recently there has been a seed change in its admin and some awful examples of over moderation whilst some well known trolls continue their games unabated irritating others with their outlandish self aggrandisement. Hey-ho, I will continue enjoying my boat and the company of good friends with or without acces to a forum, I think I’m a little bit odd these days, probably age related, but I prefer to live in the real world not hide behind a keyboard.

Anonymity is a tricky one....

I don’t see a problem with everyone making their own decision regarding anonymity. I’m quite open about who I am but if people don’t want to do that it’s fine with me. I like to think that amongst our anonymous members we have senior people from the BA and regular posters from NBN who are too scared to speak here 😏

I have received information from an employee of the BA who can’t post what s/he knows for obvious reasons.
